A Brief History Of Denver, North Carolina
History in Denver, North Carolina began long before the revolutionary war, when the land was cultivated and maintained by the Catawba Native Americans. The Catawba people populated the riverbanks of the region, hence the naming of the banks after the tribe. In the late 1740s, the area was settled by some of the earliest pioneers on the west side of Lake Norman.
Denver is not the original name of our town, as it was historically referred to as “Dry Pond” in a feeble attempt to make the wet, swampy area seem more appealing to economic growth. Shortly thereafter, the town changed its name once again in an attempt to attract a railroad company so that they could have a rail line. During this time, Colorado was being considered to become a part of the union in 1877, and with Denver being its territorial capital, as well as a great name, Dry Pond residents decided to once again make a change.
Now fast forward another hundred years to the 1970s. Although the railroad passes through not far away, Denver never did get its rail line and failed to achieve the economic growth that it wanted. As a result of this slowed growth, our city lost it’s incorporated status, although people weren’t too mad about it.
Now fast forward again to modern day, where Denver is a small town that becomes big in the summer as it is a gateway to both Lake Norman and Charlotte. At the Riverwalk Apartment Homes, we love our town and its accessibility to both nature and the big city. One of the largest benefits that Denver has to offer as a suburb of Charlotte is that you have access to the big city while also having access to untapped nature. One of the largest natural areas that Denver has to offer is the famous Lake Norman. Created by the damming of the Catawba River, Lake Norman covers 50 square miles with it’s fingerling inlets and large open bays. On a warm summer’s day, you can expect to see multiple people sailing, paddle boarding, fishing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding, as well as participating in charter cruises.
In addition to Lake Norman, the Denver area also features a multitude of city parks and nature preserves. With parks featuring hiking trails, volleyball courts, basketball courts, grills, splash parks, playgrounds and so much more, you are sure to never be bored on a warm summer’s day.
